Pure Soul were an all-girl R&B quartet from Washington, D.C. that consisted of members Shawn Allen, Heather Perkins, Keitha Shepherd and Kristin Hall. In 1995, Pure Sugar released their self-titled debut album, which peaked at #173 on the Billboard 200 and #33 on Billboard’s R&B Albums chart. Their first single “We Must Be in Love” which peaked at #65 on the Billboard
Hot 100, #22 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Music\Maxi-Single Sales chart, and #11 on Billboard’s Hot R&B Singles chart, staying on the chart for 29 weeks. The song became their biggest hit to date. Pure Soul released their second single from the album “I Want You Back” which peaked at #101 on Billboard’s Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart, #36 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Music\Maxi-Singles Sales chart, and #26 on Billboard’s Hot R&B Singles chart, staying on the chart for 17 weeks. The video became the top five most played video on the BET Network. The single was produced by well-known music producer, Teddy Riley.
Pure Soul was featured on the single, “Freedom” which was featured on the “Panther” movie soundtrack. The song featured artists such as Aaliyah, MC Lyte, Mary J. Blige, Blackgirl, Tyler Collins, En Vogue, Jade, Queen Latifah, Monica, Pebbles, SWV, Tracie Spencer, Sweet Sable, TLC, Crystal Waters, Karyn White, Y?NVee, and Zhane. The last single from the album “Stairway to Heaven” which was released in 1996. The song managed to peak at #79 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #18 on Billboard’s Hot R&B Singles chart, staying on the chart for 18 weeks. A radio remix version of the song featured legendary R&B group, the O’Jays. After that, nothing much has been heard from Pure Soul and they’ve seem to have faded into obscurity.
